Coinciding with World Tourism Day, the ticketing platform for museums and cultural attractions,Tiqets , has announced the winners of the Remarkable Venue Awards. These recognize the sites of cultural interest and the most authentic tourist experiences from nine countries around the world.

Among these countries is Spain, for which the platform has reported the seven best cultural attractions in 2022 . Among them is the castle of Almodóvar del Río , which located in Córdoba is one of the most spectacular in Spain.

Its origin

The town of Almodóvar del Río, located in the province of Córdoba, was of great importance in the Muslim defense of the Caliphate. This is due to its strategic position , since it is located on a hill at an altitude of about 250 meters, and next to the Guadalquivir river. The different cultures, first the Muslim and later the Christian, have shaped the architectural style of this fortress.

The origin of the castle of Almodóvar del Río is estimated to have been around the year 740 , when the Umayyads built a fortress under the name of al-Mudawar , a name that would eventually evolve into Almodóvar. During the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries, the fortress and its area formed part of the Emirate and subsequent Caliphate of Córdoba , while in the 11th century it was assigned first to the Taifa of Carmona and then to that of Seville. After the Christian conquest, in the year 1240 it was incorporated by agreement to the Crown of Castile by Fernando III, who handed it over three years later to the Council of Córdoba.

Already at the beginning of the 20th century , the restoration and reconstruction works of the castle began at the hands of Rafael Desmassières y Farina, 12th Count of Torralva , and the architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova, since the castle was in an advanced state of deterioration. Today, it is owned by the Marquis de la Motilla.
