What is happiness? According to the Dictionary of the language it is a “state of pleasant spiritual and physical satisfaction” and “the absence of inconveniences or setbacks”. We assume that people can be happy, but can countries be too?

After analyzing the results, the SDSN has made the 2022 list public; a list that Finland heads once again. Do you want to know the countries that occupy the top 10 positions on the list? We present them below. They are happy societies, but in addition, each of them has its own charms.

1. Finland

Sunset in the port of Helsinki, capital of Finland.

The happiest country in the world for the fifth consecutive year can also boast of having more than enough attractions to seduce travelers at any time of the year. Finland is a natural paradise of impressive lakes and forests, without a doubt a real anti-stress medicine.

2. Denmark

Nyhavn, the old port of the capital of Denmark, the 2nd happiest country in the world.

Denmark has risen one place in the ranking compared to last year. Once again, a country in northern Europe with a quality of life among the best on the planet stands out for the happiness of its inhabitants. Those who visit it are not disappointed. And it is the ingredients that make it a tempting destination without innumerable.

3. Iceland

Northern lights in Iceland, the 3rd happiest country in the world.

Iceland has lost a position in the World Happiness Report in favor of Denmark. With one of the best healthcare systems and one of the lowest crime rates in the world, the country is a haven for travelers and an ideal destination for solo adventurers. It has 130 volcanoes; countless museums in the capital and extraordinary natural landscapes in the form of glaciers, icebergs, geysers and waterfalls, without forgetting the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon and the northern lights, visible between November and March.

4. Switzerland

Kramgasse street and clock tower in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, which is ranked 4th in the list of the happiest countries in the world.

We don’t know if chocolate has anything to do with the happiness of the Swiss (repeat in 4th position), but what we are sure of is that savoring one of the country’s most famous products is a real pleasure. Not surprisingly, the construction of a theme park is planned in the small town of Broc, which will open its doors in 2025.

5. Netherlands

Bicycles and canals are some of the icons of Amsterdam. The city is the capital of the Netherlands, located in 5th position in the ranking of the happiest countries in the world.

The Netherlands remain in 5th place. We often associate this beautiful corner of northwestern Europe with windmills, tulips, bicycles and, of course, its capital, Amsterdam. However, there are many other places to get lost: cities like Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Utrecht or The Hague; its spectacular dams or the Space Expo, south of Haarlem.

6. Luxembourg

Luxembourg, the 6th happiest country in the world of 2022.

Luxembourg breaks into the top ten this year with force. The 7th smallest country in Europe -it occupies only 2,586 km2- is paradoxically the one that most emphatically protects its natural spaces in the entire Old Continent, according to a study carried out by SaveOnEnergy. And it is that the Grand Duchy has 76% of its surface -1,963 km2- under protection, so, in addition to its capital, it is essential to visit the natural parks of Our and Sûre Superior. The latter, habitat of fauna and flora of interest, also treasures numerous ruins of castles, churches and mills.

7. Sweden

Stortorget square in the old town of Stockholm. Sweden occupies the 7th position in the list of the happiest countries in the world.

Sweden ranks 7th in the 2022 World Happiness Report, one down from last year’s report. Possibly one of the secrets lies in the lagom, a concept based on balance and measure. If you want to check it out and travel to the Scandinavian country, known for its design, you will discover that it is very worthwhile.

8. Norway

Preikestolen is one of the icons of Norway, the 8th happiest country in the world.

Without leaving Scandinavia, we travel to Norway, which occupies the same position compared to last year’s ranking. Norway is also a safe destination, which is why it usually appears as one of the most recommended countries when traveling alone and, especially, if the protagonist of the journey is a woman. Apart from its fjords and its spectacular natural landscapes -such as the Preikestolen stone gorge -popularly known as El Púlpito-, the Jostedal glacier or the Latefossen waterfall-, Norway offers us the opportunity to spend the night in corners of incomparable beauty and to enjoy of the northern lights. Do not miss a walk through the capital, Oslo, or the delicious Bergen.

9. Israel

A street in Tel Aviv. Israel is the 9th happiest country in the world.

Israel sneaks into the top ten this year with an added peculiarity: it is the first of the non-European states ranked among the 10 happiest on the planet. With religion, history, archaeology, architecture or gastronomy as some of its most outstanding attractions, it is a great treasure to discover. Tel Aviv -the city that never sleeps- with its Bauhaus-style buildings and its beaches; the peculiar waters of the Dead Sea; Old Jerusalem, or the gardens of Haifa are must-sees for any traveler.

10. New Zealand

Lake Marian, in New Zealand, the 10th happiest country in the world.

The 2022 World Happiness Report ranks New Zealand in No. 10, an archipelago in Oceania admired by adventurers and trekkers. It has two main islands, the North and the South, with corners such as Lake Tekapo and Milford Sound, considered among the most beautiful on the planet.
