History of the Maison Cailler brand

François-Louis Cailler and Abram LC Cusin de Aubonne opened a sweet shop in 1819 in Vevey, selling all the popular sweets and of course chocolate.This is where the legend began... Photo: NestléThis is where the legend began… 

Abram was dedicated to doing business and getting suppliers while Cailler was in charge of the administration of the establishment.

By 1820 people were asking for more of his chocolates, so Cailler rented a factory to produce more of his treats and meet the high demand for his merchandise. Great idea!It has been a family business since 1819. Photo: AdvantageIt has been a family business since 1819. 

A few years later, Abram and Cailler broke up their partnership leaving Cailler in charge of the business, however, the place suffered from an economic crisis which sent it into bankruptcy.

In 1826 the factory managed to recover from the crisis thanks to Cailler’s wife, so he decided to return as the first in command, in 1852 François-Louis Cailler died.

At that time his wife and children, Auguste and Alexandre took it upon themselves to uphold their father’s legacy.Francois-Louis Cailler.

During 1875 Cailler’s son-in-law Daniel Peter created milk chocolate, whose combination of flavors had a huge impact on the chocolate industry.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Daniel Peter and Charles-Amédée Kohler joined forces and created a separate chocolatier called Société Générale Suisse de Chocolats Peter et Kohler Réunis.In 1907 Cailler expands its range of chocolates by introducing Fémina. In 1911, Peter and Kohler decided to team up with Cailler to introduce Swiss chocolate like no other, creating a new style of making that was creamier AND more delicious!

In 2010, the popular Maison Cailler Museum – La Chocolaterie Suisse was inaugurated, where you can find more information about its origins, its importance in the chocolate industry and its way of marketing.

In 2019, Maison Cailler celebrated 200 years of sharing its delicious products with the world.

For adults 15 Swiss francs, seniors and students 12 Swiss francs and for those under 16 the entrance is free.
