Beyond the tourist Mykonos, Santorini and Crete, Greece invites the traveler to disconnect in a unique paradise
There are about 6,000 islands and islets in the Aegean and Ionian Seas . Only 227 are inhabited and keep, in addition to the secrets of Greek mythology, the passage of the Romans, the Turks, the Arcadians, the Persians or the Venetians. Of all this, I am only sure that these islands were populated by nymphs and gods and goddesses. In one of them, the mythology says that King Minos , while he was in the rite of the sacrifice of graces, was aware of the death of his son but continued the rite. He did us a favor, because the graces, the cárites in Greek, are still present on the island: beauty, abundance and joy .
The Greek islands receive thousands and thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, but not all the islands are massively exploited by the tourist industry that this year in Greece has recovered the previous pulse of the pandemic. Mykonos, Santorini or Crete have mass tourism, but islands like Paros are still a paradise worth visiting . Paros can be reached by plane and by boat. By boat you reach Parikia, the capital, which is the closest thing to a hive of people and circulatory chaos. By plane, with two propellers, of course, one arrives at the small airport – the one in Mahón next to it is of the first division – located in the south of the island near the paradisiacal Aliky and next to Pounta where you take the ferry to go to the island of Antiparos, which is barely a kilometer away and can be reached in seven minutes.
The area is a paradise for wind kate surfers. It is not that the air, this year with gusts exceeding 36 kilometers per hour and permanent, is an anecdote, but the island with more than 118 coves with turquoise blue waters and impressive transparency gives the opportunity to seek shelter from a phenomenon which is permanent in the islands during the months of July and August.
Typical port of the Greek islands
In Paros it is almost obligatory to visit Kostos and Marathi and contemplate the sunset from their mountains where the old marble mine is located and, without a doubt , Náousa , to the north of the island, presided over by an imposing Venetian castle and flanked by two beaches that make the delights for young people –in the evening– and adults the rest of the day: Santa MarÃa to the east and Monastiri and Colimbithres to the west .
At Venus de Milo
From the main island of the Cyclades we travel to Milos, the island of the Venus de Milo. Much smaller than Paros, it is a haven of peace and tranquility. Its beaches are located in the south of the island while in the north the rocky coves delight divers, where Pollonia is located, a wonderful seaport where you can taste the delicacies of the Mediterranean . Not to be missed are the wonderful sunsets at Tripity where the Roman theater and catacombs are located.
The Aegean islands, the vast majority of them, are an undiscovered paradise where tourists recharge their batteries enjoying landscapes, Mediterranean cuisine (where octopus that dries in the sun is a regular on the table and tablecloth) and beaches.
Paradisiacal Unlike Athens, the temperature is much more pleasant and depending on which day a “rebequita” is advisable because the wind substantially cools the thermometer. Also, unlike the capital, the islands are clean and proof of this is the quality of their waters.
However, despite the dirt and degradation of Athens, it is always a pleasure to visit the Hellenic capital. The Acropolis and the neighborhood that surrounds it with an endless succession of souvenir shops and restaurants of all kinds that reach the Duomo of the Blessed Virgin on the outskirts of Syntagma Square, where the changing of the guard and the steps, simulating those of a horse, from the guards delight the visitors.
In the Piazza del Duomo stands out a restaurant, called the Barbounaki , which means red mullet. One of the few that has a menu in Spanish. Without a doubt, highly recommended. Greece is undoubtedly a trip that must be made because the islands of the gods must not be missed.
